I spent $1,200 replacing suitcases before I finally realised what the real problem was

It started when my first suitcase gave up on a cobblestone street in Italy — one wheel chipped, then cracked, then wobbled so badly I had to drag it sideways through Florence. Annoying, but fine. I figured it was old. So I bought a shiny new one.

The very first trip a baggage handler tossed it onto the conveyor belt like it weighed nothing… and the wheel didn’t break off, but it scratched, cracked, and rolled loudly for the rest of the trip. Dragging it through the airport sounded like someone pushing a filing cabinet.

So I bought another suitcase. My third one. Total spent so far? $1,200… and not a single wheel survived more than a couple of holidays.

At that point I wasn’t just frustrated — I was genuinely annoyed at myself for keeping on replacing entire suitcases when it was always the wheels that died first.

I thought I just needed a “better quality suitcase”… but there was more to it

I couldn’t keep buying new suitcases every time the wheels broke. So I decided to figure out what the actual problem was. I read a bunch of articles about suitcases and how they’re made.

Turns out:

The wheels take ALL the impact.
They’re the first part of the suitcase to hit the ground.
They’re exposed during every drop, bump, toss, and conveyor belt launch.
And most brands don’t reinforce them enough… even the expensive ones.

What surprised me most? Once a wheel gets a tiny chip, the damage spreads fast. That’s when the wobbling starts. That’s when the grinding noise begins. That’s when your bag becomes a workout machine.

Why the usual “solutions” don’t work

I tried all the usual tricks:

Wrapping my luggage in cling wrap (protects NOTHING)
Buying a suitcase cover (covers the fabric, not the wheels)
Telling myself I’d be “gentler” with my bag (pointless when baggage handlers throw it)
Switching to more expensive luggage (those wheels broke too)
DIY hacks like rubber bands or makeshift covers (fell off instantly)

Let’s be honest — there is nothing you can do in an airport that will stop those wheels from getting smashed… unless you protect them.
